August Newsletter and Calendar

July 26, 2013 • JAK's Place

The latest NAMI Doorways / JAK’s newsletter and JAK’s Place calendar are ready to pick up.

The CSP Picnic is on Friday, August 23. Gathering starts at 11am, dinner at 12. Games, swimming, just lounging around on the beach, and BINGO with prizes! Get down to Sunset Park with your sunscreen and have some fun. JAK’s will be closed that day.

We are hoping to sell more Quilt Raffle tickets this month. Don’t forget that the Open House and raffle drawing are next month. Any ideas on good places to display the quilt and sell tickets, give us a heads-up at JAK’s Place.

There will be Yoga on the 5th, 12th, and 19th, but not on the 26th.

July Newsletter and Calendar

June 27, 2013 • JAK's Place

It sure is summer. The annual NAMI-Door County picnic is just around the corner. Monday, July 8, is the day; Otumba Park is the place; and 5:00 is the time. Dinner will be served at 5:30. We’re hoping to make our own little music festival this year, so bring an instrument if you have one. Everyone has a voice 😉

A lot has happened in the past month. The gardens are bursting forth from fresh compost, there’s a new(er) and rather awesome computer in the office, and a riding mower in the shed. We had a record-making Brat Fry, and we hope for a repeat performance at the end of July. The Quilt Raffle is progressing well, so far. Don’t forget that tickets are available at JAK’s Place!

Another new thing is that NAMI-Door County is now on twitter! Follow us — @NAMIdoor

So, here are the latest JAK’s newsletter and calendar. Please note that there will be no meal on Tuesday, July 9, the day after the Picnic.

April Newsletter

March 29, 2013 • JAK's Place

The latest NAMI Doorways is hitting snailboxes already. Flowers are peeking out between old snowbanks, and most of us have missed seeing the first robin of spring (I mean, how do we know it’s the first anyway? Only some unlucky worm knows for sure).

There is a small error in the calendar that was sent to CSP; we will not be closed on the first of April. Kind of an accidental April Fool’s joke. There definitely will be Tai Chi and Yoga, too.

Though winter is over, it’s still cold enough to need a quilt at night. The Quilting Ladies of Holy Name of Mary Chuch, Maplewood, donated one of their productions to JAK’s Place. It’s not as elegant as our raffle quilt, but very warm and cozy. Anyone in need of covering can claim it.

The Film Group is picking up momentum. Our moviemakers are considering entering Tech Soup’s Digital Storytelling contest. Anyone is welcome to join the group, whether or not they have a camera or a computer. The JAK’s computers are available for use by the group as well as for general computer learning purposes. The software of choice for video editing is Wax, from www.debugmode.com. It is free, and while much easier to learn to use than many other video editors, is capable of producing pretty slick videos.

March Newsletter and Calendar

February 26, 2013 • JAK's Place

February was awesome for its size. Our Seventh Annual Love Festival Concert was the best ever, raising over $3,000 as well as providing enjoyment for a large audience of music lovers.

Now March is blowing in, melting the snow and releasing the first spring flowers. A new quilt is blooming too. Sheryl Flores’ Aunt Bettie has made a lovely queen-size quilt for us to raffle. Last year’s raffle was quite successful for a first-time event. We’re hoping that with some experience, we’ll do even better.

Also new in March is the Film Group, with Ed DiMaio. If you’ve ever wanted to make a movie, JAK’s Place is now the place to start. Learn how to piece together sight and sound as well as how to shoot a visually attractive or dramatic scene. The group, open to everyone, will meet on Fridays at 2:30

January 2013 Newsletter and Calendar

January 1, 2013 • JAK's Place

Yes, a new year is here. JAK’s Place has now seen six of them come. We hope for many more, and for more friends to help us celebrate them 🙂

Every new year brings changes and challenges. JAK’s Place and NAMI-DC face plenty of both this year. One challenge is finding new board members with the energy and insight to carry us forward through all the changes. Another is the perennial struggle to make ends meet. With budget cuts shrinking our funding, we will need every bit of support we can get. But we do have our angels that turn up unexpectedly when they are needed.
