And the big news is…the NINTH Annual Love Festival Concert is upon us! Sunday, February 15, 2pm, at Bay View Lutheran Church, Sturgeon Bay. This year we have two awesome school groups — 7th and 8th grade choirs from Algoma and Srugeon Bay’s T.J.Walker, for a total of nearly 90 young voices. Paul Klapatch will be Master of Ceremonies again as well as tooting his own horn with the Bone Boys.

January 2015 Newsletter and Calendar

December 26, 2014 • JAK's Place

Yes, ohmygosh, gee, wow, another year begins. Herein we take a look at what was and think about what can be.

Coming up in February, the NINTH Annual Love Festival Concert is in the works. Let’s hope nothing freezes over on February 15 — although the sudden change of venue went amazingly well last time, we don’t need that much excitement.

Membership renewals and donations sparked by the annual appeal mailing have been rolling in. Big thankyous to all who have and will yet support NAMI Door County and JAK’s Place. One year at a time, we do our best to make a difference.

One of the Big News Stories of 2014/2015 is the retirement of Paul Klapatch. The CSP Holiday Party included a celebration of the event. Cake, speeches, and all the trimmings.

2014 is nearly over. But don’t get so carried away by the mad holiday rush that you lose sight of the happiness.

Holidays can get out of hand. What should be a bright moment in the yearly cycle of life sometimes becomes too demanding, disrupting healthy routines while adding heavy burdens. We need to welcome the joy, not try to force it.

Sit down and relax. Have a cup of tea or eggnog and read a newsletter. 😉

The annual CSP Holiday Party, at Hope church on December 18, from 11am to 2:30pm, will also be a celebration of Paul Klapatch’s retirement. Come and give him a big hand. Paul has worked “like a Belgian horse” (to quote the late Gabriele Wolfe) for many years, often on call at all hours during an otherwise taxing work week. Starting January 2, he will be able to sleep at night!

We need several new board members. Don’t everybody step forward now and unbalance the planet’s rotation…. 😉

The Halloween party was loads of fun. Jodi’s Famous Chili, Bingo, and some very creative costumes kept JAK’s Place rockin’.

October Newsletter and Calendar (revised)

September 29, 2014 • JAK's Place

Welcome to autumn. 🙂

The month kicks off with Mental Illness Awarenesss Week, yet another time dedicated to dragging reality out of the closet to get some fresh air. As usual, NAMI Door county will have a display at the Sturgeon Bay Library. The libraries will be presented with eight copies of a book by a local writer, Tara Meissner. Stress Fracture is the story of her ordeal and recovery.

An event worth noting will be held at Stone Harbor Resort and Conference Center, 107 North First Ave, Sturgeon Bay. On October 7, beginning at 6pm with a Resource Fair and hors d’oeuvres, it will feature a presentation by Rob Valentine on Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders: Strength Through Understanding

On a lighter note, the annual JAK’s Place / CSP Halloween Party will take place from 1-3pm on October 31. Dress up for prizes! There will be plenty to eat.

Here is the first issue of our new unified newsletter. From now on, there will be no separate NAMI Door County or JAK’s Place newsletter.

August 27, 2014 • JAK's Place

Here comes Fall, and JAK’s Place is celebrating its eighth birthday. Don’t miss our Open House on Saturday, September 20, from 11am to 1pm. At noon, some lucky person will win a queen size quilt. There’s still time to buy raffle tickets (hint hint hint).

Our newsletter is undergoing some changes. This is the last JAK’s Place-only issue. Next month the new NAMI Door County and JAK’s Place combined version becomes the norm.

We are also thinning our mailing list. Quite a few people who get the NAMI Doorways simply because their name got on the list will soon be dropped, unless they opt to receive email notification instead. It costs a lot to print and mail paper newsletters, and practically nothing to upload PDF files and send a “monthly spam.”
