Flu season has temporarily thinned out attendance at JAK’s, but the beat goes on with the Seventh Annual Love Festival Concert just around the corner.

November Newsletter and Calendar

October 29, 2012 • JAK's Place

What are we thankful for?
– People: volunteers, donors, friends and family
– The beauty of changing seasons
– A warm home and enough food
– That change is possible

If that isn’t enough, build your own list 🙂

The annual NAMI-DC Dinner Meeting will be held on Monday, November 12, at Bay view Lutheran Church. Social time at 5:00, dinner at 5:30, and business begins at 6:00. Volunteers will be honored; then the meeting and election of officers will proceed.

Everyone is encouraged to attend. Bring a dish — snacks, salads, veggies, desserts. NAMI will supply the main course and beverages.

There will be two Packer Parties this month; Sundays, Nov. 4th and 18th, both at noon.

JAK’s Place will be closed for Thanksgiving, and the day after.

Summer is about to fade into fall. It was a busy one at JAK’s Place. So much went on we can’t put half of it in the newsletter, but watch for new pages here. 🙂

There’s plenty of activity this month too. On Saturday, September 15, we’re celebrating the beginning of our 7th year with an Open House. JAK’s Place will be open from 11am to 2pm, and the Quilt Raffle drawing will be at 2:00! You can buy tickets up until 1:30.

Two Packer Parties are scheduled for your Sunday afternoon pleasure; games start at 3:15 on September 9 and 30.

The Journaling Poets Group will be meeting on Fridays, instead of Thursdays. Magda’s Nutrition class will be on Thursdays at 4:00. Friday is still Computer Day. Yoga and Tai Chi on all Mondays except the first; we’ll ve closed for Labor Day.

July Newsletter — NAMI Doorways

July 1, 2012 • JAK's Place

The combined NAMI-JAK’s newsletter is early. We are stepping up the pace again. This month’s big events are the annual NAMI Picnic on Monday, July 9, and our second Brat Fry of the year on the 27-28-29 weekend. JAK’s Place will be closed on July 4, and there will be no dinner on the 10th; otherwise, hours will be normal.

Because of the picnic, there will be no Support Group on the 9th, and there will be only one Yoga class this month, on the 23rd.

The picnic will be at Otumba Park, as always. Gathering begins at 5, dinner at 5:30. Brats, burgers and beverages are on the house. Bring a dish to share and enjoy a breezy, relaxed social gather.

VOTE!

June 1, 2012 • JAK's Place

Need to know more about the issues and the candidates? http://wisconsinvote.org/ has it all.

Here is the uncut version of Seth’s article for the newsletter (it was trimmed slightly to fit the paper version):

One of my favorite sayings these days is: “Vote as if your life depends upon it, because it does.”

We are fortunate enough to live in a country that, in theory at least, we can participate in our government. We have the opportunity to elect our own leaders and the power to effect what our elected leaders do. However, there is a catch, we have to take it upon ourselves to actively research our potential leaders and educate ourselves as to what they stand for and what they will do to serve us. Our elected officials work for US. We pay their salaries with OUR tax money. If they deceive us while in office we have a right to hold them accountable. Elected officials are not above the law. They must play by the same rules as the rest of us.

I am confident that everyone who reads this article is aware of the upcoming Recall Election that will be held on June 5th. I hope only that every one of you will register and vote. If you care about things like: education, environmental protection, health care, Social Security, Medicaid, taxes and job creation, you need to vote. Ask yourself, “What matters to me?” and “What do I believe in?” Find out what the different candidates stand for and research what they have done in the past. Government officials must maintain ‘transparency’ while in office. You have the right to know about everything they do as a politician. They cannot dismiss our inquiries. They must not lie.

Do you vote? Are you registered to vote? If not, why not? We have the right to elect the officials that will best serve us. This is a free country and it will remain so as long as politicians have to answer to us, the voters. If you haven’t voted in the past because you think your vote doesn’t matter or that there are no good candidates consider this: voting is our right, as Americans, and if you don’t vote you should not complain. Voting is not just a privilege, it is an opportunity to positively effect our communities and improve our lives.
